Al publicarse lo que por cincuenta años ha sido el hacer poético de Laura Gallego,

se busca lograr más que ampliar su espacio bibliográfico dentro del canon de la

poesía puertorriqueña del siglo veinte. Importa acercarse hoy a esta obra como al

animal vivo que es. Importa que esta poesía venga a quienes quieran dejarse

lastimar por su fiereza y consolar por su hermosura, lectores y lectoras que

participen del hallazgo, también vivos.


Esta edición está construida a partir de Laura Gallego: obra poética, publicada por

la Editorial Universitaria en 1972, en la que se hizo una selección de los primeros

libros de la autora, Presencia (1950) y Celajes (1951-53) y se incluyeron cuatro

libros inéditos: Almejas de tu nombre (1954), En carne viva (1955),

La red (1956-60) y La del alba sería (1960-64). Hoy, más de treinta años después,

se les devuelve a los dos primeros libros su cuerpo total y se incluyen cuatro libros

nuevos: Que voy de vuelo (1971-72), El amor combatido (1974), Arirán (1985) y

Paloma de aire (1998-2000).

Publishing a collection of fifty years of the poetic work of Laura Gallego is more

than an attempt to augment her biographical place in the canon of twentieth

century Puerto Rican poetry. It is an effort to approach her work as the living

animal it is. What matters is that this poetry becomes available to those willing to

allow themselves be hurt by the ferociousness of the work and be consoled by its

beauty, readers willing to become part of its discovery.

This edition is based on Laura Gallego: obra poética, published by the University of

Puerto Rico Press in 1972, which included a selection from the author’s first two

books, Presencia (1950) and Celajes (1951-1953), as well as four unpublished

collections: Almejas de tu nombre (1954), En carne viva (1955), La red (1956-60)

and La del alba sería (1960-64). Today, thirty years later, the first two books

appear in their entirety and four new collections are included: Que voy de vuelo

(1971-72), El amor combatido (1974), Arirán (1985) and Paloma de aire (1998-

2000).
